Lady Wolves sweep Northeast in MACJC doubleheader

 MG 8025

April 18, 2017

WESSON – The Lady Wolves moved to 17-19 overall and 12-12 in league play on the year as Co-Lin rattled off 22 hits in a sweep of Northeast Community College. The Lady Tigers fall to 11-13 in the MACJC and 25-19 overall after dropping game one 4-3, and game two 12-5.

“These were two big wins today,” said Lady Wolves’ head coach Allen Kent. “Bailey Root threw a great game we got some timely hitting today.”

The Lady Wolves travel to Biloxi High School Wednesday, April 19 to take on Mississippi Gulf Coast. Game one of the doubleheader is set for a 4 p.m. start.

Co-Lin 4, Northeast 3

The Lady Wolves struck first in game one when Dianna Hobgood ripped a line drive to centerfield and plated Kamryn Vanlandingham. Vanlandingham drove in Logan Deroche in the second to stretch Co-Lin’s lead to 2-0.

The Lady Wolves’ pitching and defensive play remained great as Co-Lin extended the lead. Alexsundria Thomas hit a sacrifice in the fly in the bottom of the fifth and scored Hobgood giving Co-Lin a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Tigers took advantage of an error in the sixth to score one, and another error in the top of the seventh to plate two more runs. Going into the bottom of the seventh the game was tied 3-3.

Hobgood drew a walk in the bottom of the seventh, and Jamie Martin laid down a perfect bunt to move Hobgood over. Thomas followed with a line drive to centerfield and scored Hobgood for a walk off win.

Co-Lin collected nine hits in the contest. Vanlandingham, Hobgood, and Deroche each collected multiple hits for the Lady Wolves. Vanlandingham went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Co-Lin.

Northeast had seven hits in the game. Tia Davis, Victoria Jones, and Tianna Castillo each collected multiple hits for Northeast.

Bailey Root earned the win for Copiah-Lincoln. She pitched seven innings, surrendering three runs, seven hits, and striking out four. Jessica Boyd took the loss for the Lady Tigers. She went six innings, surrendering four runs, nine hits, and striking out one.

“Vanlandingham stayed hot and came up big for us,” said Kent. “Hobgood and Deroche were instrumental in the win.”

Co-Lin 12, Northeast 5

Any early error gave the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead over Co-Lin.

Martin fired back for the Lady Wolves. Martin hit a line drive to center and scored Vanlandingham who reached on a single. Kayla Britt followed with a line drive of her own and scored Hobgood and give Co-Lin a 2-1 lead.

Back-to-back doubles from Hobgood and Martin in the second, a single from Christian Black, and a sac fly from Kayla Britt gave the Lady Wolves a 7-1 lead.

Hobgood doubled yet again in the third to score Vanlandingham and Deroche. Co-Lin led 9-1 after three innings.

Northeast battled back and scored four in the top of fifth, but it was not enough.

Black earned the win for the Lady Wolves. She pitched four and a third innings, giving up five runs, five hits, and striking out five. Rebekah Morris took the loss for Northeast. She tossed one and one-third innings, giving up six runs, seven hits, and striking out one.

Vanlandingham and Martin led the Lady Wolves with three hits each, while Hobgood and Kinley Westerfield finished with two. Martin led the Lady Wolves with four RBIs.

Tia Davis led Northeast with two hits while Tianna Castillo posted two RBIs.

“Martin and Hobgood were clutch with four and three RBIs respectively,” said Kent. “Vanlandingham stayed hot with three hits…she’s reached base in 17 consecutive plate appearances which is pretty much unheard of.”
