Alumni games draw large crowd

WESSON - First-year head coach David Strother was beyond impressed with the support and attendance during Co-Lin's Alumni Day held last Friday. Periodic rain throughout the day looked to possibly jeopardize the turn-out, but by game time, the weather turned out to be perfect.

There were close to 30 participants for the women’s match and close to 50 for the men’s game that followed.

The Lady Wolves team earned a 3-0 victory while the men’s alumni took a 5-3 victory off the current Wolfpack.

“These games today were a great tool for both our men’s and women’s teams to use so that we can gauge our progress through this tough preseason," said Strother. "Overall, I was pleased with certain things in both matches, but of course, saw room for improvement from both of them as well. I am extremely thankful for the alumni taking time out of their schedules to come back and participate.”

Strother said that he hopes to continue this tradition each season and that the attendance will only grow. “We had a great turnout for the matches this evening with well over 150 spectators. We were close to 50 players that got involved in the men's game.”

Co-Lin began soccer in 1998 as a club team on campus that was organized and maintained predominantly by the student that wished to participate. The following year (1999), the Wolves began their membership into the MACJC and have been a varsity sport on campus ever since. There have been members from both the men’s and women’s squads that have gone on to continue their playing careers at four-year institutions, but more importantly, there are alumni connected to the programs who have gone on to be positive ambassadors for the Co-Lin soccer program. Alumni that participated in the games on Friday ranged all the way from that first team in 1998 to some returners from last year’s team.

“That’s what makes an event like this so special,” Strother said. “The men and women who came back to play in these games today, came back because it meant something to them to be on these teams during their time at Co-Lin; they came back because they care. I just want to say to all that were involved, both those who played and those who came to watch, thank you for support. And next year, let’s see if we can grow it even bigger”.

Co-Lin continues their exhibition schedule this week as the men travel to Hinds Community College in Raymond, at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Regular season plays begins for both teams on Friday, Aug. 24, when they open up the season at home against Meridian. Games are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. for the women nd 6:30 p.m. for the men. Admission to the matches is free.
