Co-Lin clinches playoff spot with win over MS Delta

WESSON – The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves clinched a spot in the MACJC playoffs with a 3-2 victory over the Mississippi Delta Trojans last Saturday. Co-Lin (20-25, 14-14) dropped the nightcap 10-2. The Wolves’ playoff berth is the first since 2005 when the Wolves traveled to the NJCAA DII World Series. Co-Lin is set to take on the No. 2-seeded Northwest Community College Rangers (29-17, 17-11) on May 11-12 in a best-of-three series in Senatobia, Miss. Games times are set for Thursday at 3 p.m., Friday at 2 p.m., and game three to follow if needed. 

Co-Lin 3, MS Delta 2

Co-Lin outlasted the Trojans in game one, even through the Wolves were outhit eight to five. The Wolves took advantage of Trojan errors, and were aggressive on the base paths to secure the victory.

The Trojans drove in a run in the top of third off an infield single, but Co-Lin immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from Conner Wilkinson. 

The Wolves pulled away to a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth after Tyler McLeod roped a single to center field and scored Austin O’Flynn.

MS Delta knotted the game yet again in the fifth with a single that was dinked over the second base.

Co-Lin battled back and plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh. Jaylyn Williams grounded out to second, but scored CJ Estave who reached on an error.

Wilkinson, Williams, McLeod, Estave, and Kody Smith posted one hit each for the Wolves, while Wilkinson, Williams, and McLeod had RBIs.

Nathan Pilutti and Weber Herbison led the Trojans at the plate with two hits each. Pilutti and Tyler Jones had one RBI each.

Blake Sigrest earned the win for the Wolves on the hill. He threw three innings, allowing zero runs, four hits, striking out two, and walking zero. Wesley Ross took the loss for MS Delta. He tossed one inning, allowing zero runs, zero hits, and walking zero.

MS Delta 10, Co-Lin 2

The Trojans took advantage of the long ball in the nightcap to earn the split with the Wolves.

Co-Lin lit up the scoreboard first with a double from J.T. Wright to score Wilkinson who drew a walk.

MS Delta tied the game on a wild pitch in the second inning, but the Wolves got the run back with a solo homerun from Matthew Mordecai. After two complete the Wolves led 2-1.

A sacrifice fly and a two-run homer in the third gave MS Delta a 4-2 lead and the Trojans never looked back.

An RBI single in the fourth and a three-run shot stretched the Trojan’s lead to 9-2 after four innings. Delta’s final run came in the form of an RBI single in the top of the seventh.

A host of Wolves posted one hit each, while Wright and Mordecai led the team with one RBI apiece.

Wendell Rieves led the Trojans with two homeruns and five RBIs. Payton Lane added two hits for MS Delta.

Marsh earned the win for the Trojans. He threw six innings, giving up two runs, five hits, and striking out five. Martin took the loss for the Wolves. He pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs, two hits, striking out two, and walking one.
